 On October 15, 1815, Napoleon arrived on the island of St. Helena, some 1200 miles west of Africa. He and group of attendants, who had followed him into exile, settled in Longwood, originally built for the Lieutenant Governor. In 1816, a new Governor, Sir Hudson Lowe, arrived in St. Helena. The two men did not enjoy cordial relations and Napoleons life became increasingly reclusive. In 1817, Napoleon became ill with either an ulcer or cancer, which led to his death on May 5, 1821. This picture shows a peephole where Napoleon viewed his surroundings. |
